DAR women come from diverse backgrounds and have a variety of interests. Our common bond is our lineal descent from patriots of the American Revolutionary War. The National Society DAR defines a Revolutionary War patriot as an ancestor who aided the fight for American independence for the period between April 19, 1775 (Battle of Lexington) and November 26, 1783 (withdrawal of British troops from New York). Acceptable service includes Signers of the Declaration of Independence, Military Service, Civil Service, and Patriotic Service (click on “Acceptable Service” under Genealogy Research found in the sidebar to the right for more information). Any woman, regardless of race, religion or ethnic background, who can prove this lineage, is eligible to join.

When you join the DAR, you enter a network of more than 190,000 active women in 3000 chapters worldwide who share a common bond in the ancestral history of the founding of the United States of America and form lifelong bonds, honor their Revolutionary War ancestors and promote historic preservation, education, and patriotism in their communities. These timeless overarching principles keep the DAR strong and vitally relevant in this ever-changing world.

With more than 125 years of tradition, a vast array of service work, an historic National Society headquarters building with extraordinary collections, and countless activities taking place locally, nationally, and globally, there is much to learn about the Daughters of the American Revolution.
